Tragedy in South Korea: Jet Crash Claims 96 Lives, Sparks Aviation Safety Questions

‎A devastating plane crash shook South Korea on Sunday, leaving 96 people dead and raising critical questions about aviation safety. The tragedy occurred when Jeju Air flight 7C 2216, en route from Bangkok, crash-landed at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla province. The Boeing 737-800, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, skidded down the runway on its belly before erupting into flames, following an apparent landing gear malfunction.

‎Heartbreaking footage aired by South Korean networks showed the aircraft sliding uncontrollably, leaving smoke and debris in its wake. Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, while rescuers pulled two survivors—a male and a female crew member—from the wreckage. Despite their efforts, authorities have warned that finding additional survivors is unlikely.

‎The victims include 47 males, 48 females, and a child whose gender is yet to be determined, according to the South Jeolla Fire Service. Among the passengers were two Thai nationals, confirmed by South Korea's Land Ministry. Investigators are now focused on retrieving the black box flight data recorders to piece together the events leading to the crash.

‎Aviation journalist Geoffrey Thomas expressed surprise at the incident, citing the strong safety record of both the aircraft model and the airline. "The Boeing 737-800 is one of the most reliable aircraft in the world, with excellent maintenance standards in South Korea," he noted.

The crash comes during a period of political turmoil in South Korea, as acting president Choi Sang-mok oversees the response. Choi, who assumed the role just two days prior, visited the crash site, pledging full support for the investigation.

‎As the nation mourns, questions linger over how such a tragedy could occur under clear skies and favorable conditions. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of rigorous safety measures in aviation.
