Independence Square Temporarily Closed Ahead of John Dramani Mahama’s Swearing-In

The Independence Square, one of Ghana's most iconic landmarks, will be temporarily closed to the public from December 31, 2024, to January 8, 2025, as part of preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama. This was announced by the Ministry of Information in a public statement.

Preparations for a Historic Event

‎The ministry explained that the closure is necessary to facilitate extensive preparations for the historic event, scheduled to take place on January 7, 2025. The swearing-in ceremony will mark John Dramani Mahama's return to the presidency following his victory in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

‎"The temporary closure of Independence Square and its environs is a necessary measure to enable seamless planning and execution of the swearing-in ceremony. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appeal to the public for their cooperation," the statement read.

Impact on Traffic and Access

‎The ministry further noted that the closure will affect access to major roads around Independence Square, including Castle Road, 28th February Road, and the stretch leading to the Black Star Gate. To mitigate disruptions, alternative routes have been designated to ensure smooth traffic flow.

‎Motorists and the general public have been advised to avoid the area during the period of closure and to follow traffic directives.

‎Government officials, event planners, and security agencies are reportedly working tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to draw dignitaries from across the globe, highlighting its national and international significance.

Conclusion

‎The temporary closure of the Independence Square is a critical step in ensuring a smooth and memorable swearing-in ceremony for President-Elect John Dramani Mahama. While the restrictions may cause some inconvenience, the public is urged to cooperate fully with the authorities during this period.
