In the early hours of today, a massive fire engulfed sections of the Kantamanto Market in Accra, leaving countless traders and shop owners counting their losses. The fire reportedly began behind the Ghana Commercial Bank and spread rapidly, destroying shops, structures, and goods worth millions of cedis.
Eyewitnesses say the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene but failed to contain the flames effectively. A trader alleged that the first fire tender brought to the scene contained petrol instead of water, which allegedly worsened the situation. "The fire spread faster because of the petrol they brought," the trader claimed, expressing frustration over the service's handling of the incident.
Meanwhile, some traders suspect foul play, accusing members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately orchestrating the fire. According to them, the fire could be a plot to take over the market space for their allies now that the NDC is in power. "This is not a coincidence. It looks like they want to clear us out to bring their people in," a trader alleged.
The devastating fire has left thousands of traders without their livelihoods, with many calling on authorities to investigate the cause of the blaze thoroughly. Kantamanto Market, known for its bustling trade activities, is a vital economic hub in Accra, and this disaster has shaken the entire community.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. However, traders are urging the government to support them in rebuilding their businesses and to ensure that those responsible for the fire are brought to justice.
