Ghana has a new Speaker of Parliament, and it’s a name many of you will know—Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
Alban Bagbin, who has served the country in various capacities over the years, takes on this prestigious role once again, making history as the Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament. This time, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds the Majority, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) forms the Minority.
A Simple Yet Significant Moment
The journey to electing him was straightforward but meaningful. During the session, the Clerk of Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Djietro, called out the names of all members of Parliament as submitted by the Electoral Commission.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Majority Leader, nominated Mr. Bagbin for the position. The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin—showing rare cooperation across the political divide. With no other nominations, the Clerk declared, “Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is the Speaker of the 9th Parliament.”
The final step was his swearing-in, conducted by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who led the solemn ceremony.
As Speaker, Mr. Bagbin will play a key role in guiding Parliament’s discussions and ensuring that the voices of all Ghanaians are heard, regardless of their political affiliation. This position requires wisdom, fairness, and a deep commitment to Ghana’s development—qualities Mr. Bagbin has demonstrated throughout his career.
Let’s Watch History in the Making
With Alban Bagbin as Speaker, there’s hope for a Parliament that focuses on collaboration and finding solutions to issues that matter to you—better roads, healthcare, education, and opportunities for all Ghanaians.
